25 October 2005 - South Africa
Charles Culbert, vice chairman of Gauteng region reports from South Africa

“In the morning we hosted a charity boerewors roll braai for over 450 children at Emisebeni Primary School, MOFOLO VILLAGE, Soweto (which was found through Starfish Charity Organisation). There were over 20 chefs from the industry who helped feed these wonderful children who thanked us by dancing and singing the lunchtime away. They were so well organised and sat in rows waiting for their turn to come up and get a boerewors roll (donated by Shoprite/Checkers together with the charcoal and firelighters), a Bibo cooldrink (donated by Coca Cola), a sweet and toy (donated by 1 Time Airways). The ages of the children ranged from about 5 years to about 10 years old. I am telling you, these children were so well behaved, they put a lot of other schools to shame. For more photo's please go to the SACA website.

In the evening we had the social event at Unilever's Offices in Woodmead. It was great to see so many Board of Directors there, including Martin Kobald, Stephen Billingham, Owen Julies, Craig Elliot and our Gauteng Committee members. There were approximately 50-60 chefs there enjoying the lasagne (mince sponsored by Shoprite/Checkers) and Chicken a' la King (chicken sponsored by Rainbow) and all the cooking done (and sponsored by Unilever together with their premises and staff who worked overtime), delicious salads (sponsored by Fruit Spot), huge cheese selection (sponsored by Caterix), wine (sponsored by De Wetshof) and beer (sponsored by SAB).

The food was excellent, thanks to Nancy and her team and everyone climbed in and good comments abounded from all sides. There was also a raffle at R10 a ticket and Cordelia Kunaka (a new member) won the weekend for 2 away from Southern Sun, second prize going to Rousseau Hill of a steamer set, third prize to Neels du Plooy of a McCains hamper, and fourth prize going to Owen Julies of a bottle of wine. I believe the last people left just after 1am, so obviously everyone had a good time. International Chef's Day certificates were handed out to everyone who attended the morning and evening functions as a thankyou for their participation.
