Rainbow Centre Balestier Special School

First-time helper Yvonne Liew from Unilever Food
Solutions was enjoying herself. It was her first time
at the Rainbow Centre Balestier Special School, and
she was representing her company (one of the main
sponsors for the event), in providing help for this
project. Together with the group of chefs led by Eric
Neo from Oh’s Farm Catering, she and another
colleague had gathered at the Special School at 830
in the morning to prepare to serve the children for
their recess at 930am.
“It’s a very good experience. At least
I have the chance to be involved in charity,”
she shared.
For the chefs from the Singapore Chefs Association,
Singapore Junior Chefs Club, students from SHATEC,
Temasek Polytechnic and at-sunrice, work started way
in advance. The team of chefs had done a recce in
advance, and gathered information about the special
needs of the students. Other than finger food, dishes
that were gluten-free or included soft rice and fish
porridge was designed. In all, 230 food packs were
prepared for the children and teachers.
This was Neo’s first experience, having missed
last year’s event as he was in Erfurt for the
Culinary Olympics 2004. He shared, “This experience
has taught me that there’s a lot of unfortunate
people in Singapore, so we must make it a point to
do more.”
