Singapore Chefs Cook Up a Storm for International Chefs Day

To celebrate the inaugural International Chefs Day 2004, the Singapore Chefs Association (SCA), together with Society of Professional Chefs cooked up a storm for four charities under The National Council of Social Service. Since five o'clock in the morning, more than 150 chefs were at the main production kitchen at Swissôtel the Stamford and Raffles the Plaza to prepare specially-designed dishes for 500 beneficiaries from Bright Hill Evergreen Home, MINDS Lee Kong Chian Gardens School, Singapore Cheshire Home and Metta Day Rehabilitation Centre for The Elderly. Chefs were then divided into four groups to interact with the less fortunate.

"It is the first time that Singapore Chefs Association is doing something for charity in this way. Previously, we focused more on gala dinners for sponsors," shared David Toh, executive sous chef at Swissôtel the Stamford and Raffles the Plaza, as he interacted with the old folks at Bright Hill Evergreen Home. The menus, designed by Otto Weibel paid special attention to the health factor. For example, folks at Bright Hill Evergreen Home were offered sea bream fillet cooked in light soy sauce, fried rice, slices of roasted pork and pomelo dessert. The event was graced by Guest of Honour Jennie Chua, Chairman of Community Chest, who toured the home with the brigade of chefs later. This led to heartening moments, as residents such as Larry Wong performed songs and other displayed their works of art.

As the chefs gathered after the tour, the consensus was that this was a day well spent. Vice President of Singapore Professional Chefs association, Sunny Sia actually took a day off from work shared," I'm very excited about this event and I hope it will be recognised. Who knows, in time to come, perhaps International Chefs Day will be recognised as a public holiday." Weibel shared the same sentiments. He said, "I am proud that we did this, as this definitely puts chefs in a different light. As chefs, we should always give back to community, and I believe that the International Chefs Day will get bigger in time to come."
